The Reverse Occurred (Esther Day 9) Author-Brandon Caudill
Only God can take helpless and hopeless situations and turn them around.
Finally, after much dread and fear, the day of doom for the Jewish people throughout the Persian empire arrived. Haman’s plan began to come to fruition. However, in response to the fervent appeal of Queen Esther (Es 8:3-6), and because the original decree could not be revoked due to Persian law (Es 8:8), King Ahasuerus allowed Mordecai to issue an opposing decree allowing the Jews to defend their lives with lethal force (Es 8:9-12). And, as Esther 9:1 states, the Jews triumphed in their time of trial:
“Now in the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s command and edict were about to be carried out, on the very day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, the reverse occurred: the Jews gained mastery over those who hated them.”
When their enemies hoped to annihilate them, the reverse occurred. Instead of falling in death, the Jews walked in victory. Instead of being mastered by their enemies, they mastered them. Game, set, match—the Jews won in grand fashion. However, behind the scenes, in complete silence, God controlled everything to bring about the victory of His people.
Our text today reminds us that no matter what we may think, God is always in control. He is sovereign, leaving His fingerprints to be found on every situation we experience in life. Even when He is silent (as He is throughout the entire book of Esther), we can trust that He is at work for our good and His glory. The greatest proof of this can be found in the gospel. For when we faced our bleakest and most hopeless hour, Jesus brought about the reversal we needed to experience victory.
Instead of death, we received life. Instead of condemnation, we received pardon. Instead of punishment, we received forgiveness. Instead of exclusion, we received adoption.
So, when Satan tries to tempt, attack and malign you today, remember these gospel truths. Doing so will help you to stand firm in the Lord and in the power of His might.
May the enemy have no mastery over you!
Heavenly Father, it is such a comfort to know that You are a God of great reversals. Your Word today speaks of Your mastery over the enemies of Your people in Persia. In perfect timing, You intervened and took what was meant for evil and made it for good. In silent sovereignty, Your actions spoke loudly as You brought victory to Your people. The command and edict of the most powerful king on earth could not thwart Your perfect plan. I praise You today that what You did in Persia was magnified in Your Son, Christ Jesus. Just when it seemed that Your silence would never end and that the enemy would prevail, You spoke supremely through Jesus (Heb 1:1-2). When the fullness of time came, You sent Him to be born in the flesh to unite all things together in Himself (Gal 4:4; Eph 1:10). Satan has been defeated. Death has been overcome. Jesus, You reign supreme. May I worship You today in spirit and truth. In Your mighty name I pray. Amen.
